Dear Friends of the La Jolla Library,
With summer ending, we look back at the many successful programs featured at
your library. In particular, the La Jolla Music Festival held their annual
workshops with thirty-two musical performances from July 30 through August 20.
The musical talent at these performances was at a very high level. Our library
community is fortunate to have these "mini" concerts. The library patrons look
forward to these workshops as evidenced by the capacity attendance in the
community room. Another notable annual event was the Youth Summer Reading
Program from July 15 to August 16. This program provides a stimulus for the
youth community to explore the world of books. The success of this program is
evident by the approximate 8000 books read and an attendance of almost 1200
youths for all events.
As we move into the fall season your library has planned a number of events,
including children's programs, art displays, computer and database classes, PSAT
and SAT preparation classes, as well as the monthly movies. Please refer to the
schedule in this newsletter.
With the changes in season or holidays I'm sure you have noticed the appropriate
decorations which appear on the Friends' book sale book-cases. These decorations
are prepared by Jane Villani and Beth Dowding who consistently capture the
spirit of the occasion. Beth has also been the Friends' Book sales Chairperson
for several years. She has put in countless hours with her committee volunteers
sorting and pricing your donations of books, magazines, audio/video tapes and
CD's/DVD's. Beth has decided to step down as chairperson of the committee. On
behalf of the Friends I would like to thank Beth for her devotion and dedication
to this effort that benefits all of us. Your purchases of these donations
provide funds that are donated to the La Jolla Library. These funds together
with a generous match from the San Diego Library Foundation provide your library
with the ability to purchase new books, tapes, etc. for their collection. We
thank Jane Villani and Darryl Templer who have volunteered to be Co-Chairpersons
of the Book Sales Committee. Plan to stop by the Friends' book sale area to
inspect and purchase these bargains.
I also invite others to become a member of the Friends of the La Jolla Branch
Library. Your membership and gifts help to keep your library at a high
performance level in this era of city budgetary restraint. A printable
membership form is located on this web site (

I hope to see you soon in the library.
